The Lakes Region of New Hampshire

Samoset offers all of the amenities of a fine resort, and the quiet, reserved town of Gilford, New Hampshire offers sandy beaches, an historic covered bridge, the zipline and adventure course of Gunstock Mountain, the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion, and magnificent views of Lake Winnipesaukee from Locke Hill and Mount Major. In contrast, the neighboring town of Weirs Beach is anything but quiet! It offers miniature golf courses, ropes courses, nightclubs, and drive-in movies.  However, every town sitting on the banks of Winnipesaukee offers a unique experience to its visitors. From the "oldest summer resort in America" to "the largest arcade in the world," you will find it all in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Visitors enjoy shopping in Meredith's Mills Falls Marketplace and hiking the trails surrounding Moultonborough's Castle in the Clouds and Loon Center.  From Laconia's historic mills to "Golden Pond" or Wolfeborough's Pickering House, the Lakes Region offers an unending list of attractions that can fill summer vacations for years to come.

The best way to begin your vacation and get a "feel" for the size and majesty of Lake Winnipesaukee and the character of the region is to cruise aboard the Mt. Washington or one of the two US mail boats that make deliveries to hundreds of islands on the lake. Watch island residents repeat the traditional practice of diving into the lake from high pilings as the mail boat leaves the pier. Watch for Samoset as you sail by aboard the Mount, and watch for the Mount as it sails by Samoset. All three boats leave from the dock in Weirs Beach, where you can also rent paddle boards, kayaks, speed boats, fishing boats and jet skis. ( http://www.cruisenh.com )

Shopping and dining in the Lakes Region changes with the character of the towns. Tilton offers the Tanger Outlet Mall; Laconia has many large chain retail stores and restaurants. Meredith has high end shops, a variety of restaurants in Mills Falls Marketplace, and a Common Man Restaurant overlooking the lake. Wolfeboro offers a lovely collection of art galleries, bookstores, candy and ice cream shops, along with waterfront dining. Center Harbor's shops feature New Hampshire crafts, quilting supplies, and rustic Adirondack accessories. Moultonborough offers several quaint shops, and Alton Bay's dockside shops provide an eclectic inventory. Plus, if you want to drive about an hour further north, you can tour the large collection of popular outlets, restaurants, and shops of North Conway and other White Mountain towns.
